January 2017
SLOFD began talks with contractors and city officials for plans to build a new, second station on the east side of San Lego Obispo to better response times for the rapid development of housing going up between the city and the airport. On February 3rd, the city council approved the funds to begin building of Station 9. The council still has to approve of the final location of the station before building will begin. The new station will house a new engine, an ambulance, a light rescue and a new aerial truck.

January - December 2016
2016 was a relatively busy year for SLOFD. Several apparatus were purchased for numerous stations throughout the district. San Lego Obispo also created several new mutual aid agreements with area departments. There were 1,593 calls in the entire year of 2016, 1,092 of which were medical calls. 198 calls were for fire or smoke showing, 192 calls were for injury accidents involving motor vehicles, 92 calls for miscellaneous and 19 calls for mutual aid.

September 2015 - January 2016
SLOFD has had a busy end to 2015 and a busy start to 2016. SLOFD has made several purchases and also became a member of the International Association of Lego Fire Fighters. We are thankful for the organization selecting our department to join the many other elite departments involved in the association. SLOFD also has been doing some restructuring of the department. The restructuring includes adding an additional station to the district. This station, Station 8, is located at the Main Ranger Station located at the main park entrance into the Legowood National Forest. Station 8 has 4 apparatus that solely serve inside the forest and has 2 apparatus that are SLOFD apparatus and serve both the forest and the rest of the district. SLOFD has been negotiating with Block Creek Volunteer Fire Department located miles 13 miles west of San Lego Obispo, on the edge of Legowood National Forest, for merging with the SLOFD. The addition of Block Creek VFD will add a 7th station to the SLOFD and provide quicker response times and much needed fire services in and around LNF (Legowood National Forest) and the community of Block Creek. Updates will be pouring in in the coming days and weeks about this new merger.

SLOFD purchased Forestry 1, a 2011 Ford F-350 extended cab pickup for transporting personnel and equipment from scenes until a new bed can be customized and placed on the chassis for wildland service. It will serve out of Station 6 in Lonebrick.

The last year has been extremely slow for the SLOFD. Station 6 was completed and is currently housing Maintenance 1, Boat 1 and Boat 2. Engine 6 was being delivered last September but was involved in an accident during delivery and totaled. The incident is still under investigation and a replacement for Engine 6 is in the works.

San Lego Obispo Fire District has also looked at adding a fourth rescue unit at Station 6. This is in the early stages of planning. Stay tuned for further updates!

Construction on Station 6 has begun and the construction is expected to be completed sometime late fall as crews are wanting to complete it before winter due to the lack of storage for extra equipment. Rescue 4 was delivered this last week and also purchased was a new ambulance. Rescue 5 is a 2014 Ford F-350 Horton Ambulance and will serve out of Station 2 at Raven. Tanker 2 is in final stages of production and Engine 6 is also in the final stages of construction. SLOFD also has been searching the market for a new aerial piece and has come up with a chassis on which the piece will ride on. The manufacturer selected was Pierce and it will have an Arrow XT 8 man cab. Also, SLOFD is working with another FD about selling Engine 1 (2009 Pierce Velocity). SLOFD is upgrading, and unfortunately selling Engine 1 is a sacrifice that had to be made. Engine 102 was renumbered to Engine 1 and the empty stall at Station 1 was quickly filled with Rescue Squad 1, which will eventually go to Station 4. Rescue Squad 1 currently doesn't have any images, but expect those in the next few days.

San Lego Obispo Fire District finalized two apparatus proposals for the upcoming year. Rescue 4 and Tanker 2 are the two new apparatus being purchased as well as Engine 6 for the community of Lonebrick. Engine 6 and Tanker 2 and are expected to be delivered as soon as possible. Rescue 4 was purchased using state and federal grants and is to be equipped with equipment for the expansion of the San Lego Obispo Industrial Park and Airport because of the recent upgrade to regional airport status. SLO Regional Airport is also planning on purchasing an unknown manufacturer 2014/15 ladder truck with a platform for the airport and industrial park areas.

San Lego Obispo Fire District, as well as the community of Lonebrick, came to a consensus after several months of dispute about absorbing fire services together. San Lego Obispo Fire District could provide fire service to Lonebrick if the Fire District purchased new apparatus for the community as well as build a new fire hall. After approval from the fire board, SLOFD proposed a new piece of equipment to the Lonebrick City Council and they decided they would go ahead with the project. The fire hall is still being designed and will be proposed to the council once the design is completed by the architecture firm.

San Lego Obispo Fire placed into service Engine 11, Tanker 5, Truck 5 and Chief 1. Squad 1 was also moved to Station 5 with Tanker 5 and Truck 5. SLOFD also made a proposal to the neighboring community Lonebrick to provide fire and EMS services. Lonebrick City Council will vote at the next meeting on 17 February. If Lonebrick decides to accept the proposal, SLOFD will absorb their current department and apparatus and designate Lonebrick the site for Station 6.
2013-February 2014
The entire year of 2013 was a somewhat slow year for SLOFD. The district did purchase two new apparatus from Tom D. of St. Lego Fire Department. Ladder 1 and Engine 4 were the new rigs purchased and SLOFD also purchased 2 more apparatus from Tom D. Engine 11 and Truck 5 (Tanker 5 is the new unit number for Truck 5, the tanker stationed at Station 5.) were purchased on February 1, 2014 and are expected in the next week. Special thanks to Tom D. for building these apparatus for the district.

SLOFD will be purchasing a 2013 Pierce Velocity Quint for service in and around the San Lego Obispo Fire District. This piece of apparatus is in the early production stages, so no photos at the moment. The new Quint will be replacing an older piece of apparatus, but which piece is unknown at the time. The San Lego Obispo Fire District held a parade today in San Lego Obispo for the 11th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the United States. SLOFD also purchased a 2012 Pierce Impel Rescue Pumper and will be expecting its delivery to the department within the next week. (Special Thanks to Zachary Keenan for the construction of the engine)

San Lego Obispo Fire District had several reports of a working brush fire 2 miles Northwest of Block Elder. All equipment capable of fighting brush fires were dispatched due to the severe drought San Lego Obispo County has experienced this summer. Upon arrival (09:15), San Lego Obispo Fire District immediately went to work to exinguish the fire. SLOFD used the burn-back technique to extinguish most of the blaze, the rest was extinguished by the SLOFD tankers and natural barriers like the dirt road the inferno was next to. The last apparatus returned to their respected station at 19:52 the same day.

San Lego Obispo Fire District has become part of Embrick County. The addition of the SLOFD to Emrick County will now make Mutual Aid and other services more structured to the members of Embrick County.

San Lego Obispo Fire District purchased two pieces of apparatus from the North Lego Fire Department. San Lego Obispo Fire District purchased NLFR Engine 315, a 2009 Pierce Impel and also NLFR Engine 325, a 2008 Pierce Arrow XT.

SLOFD purchased a new ARFF truck for the marsh areas in and around San Lego Obispo County.

The San Lego Obispo Fire District assisted the Brickcinatti FD as well as a few other departments with an oil tanker accident on Hwy. 68 in Brickcinatti County. SLOFD sent Engines 1 and 2, Squad 1, Tanker 1, Brush 1 and 2 and ARFF 1 to the blaze. After about 4 hours on scene, SLOFD had sprayed foam and fire retardant chemicals on the tanker and reduced the size of the fire tremendously. SLOFD also notified Brickcinatti FD and the other departments that SLOFD was running low on foam and would be heading home. SLOFD decided it was time to go home after the last of the foam was used 10 minutes after notifying the departments the foam level was low. This was SLOFD's first major mutual aid incident.

The SLOVFD Fire Board came to a conclusion that the 3 local fire stations would come together and be now known as the San Lego Obispo Fire District.

SLOVFD responded to the Raven State Park to a "small" aircraft incident. Upon arrival, SLOVFD discovered that it was not a small aircraft incident, but a DC-10 afloat in the middle of the lake. SLOVFD called for Mutual Aid from the local military installation for a helicopter capable of pulling victims from the water. The military installation was aware of the incident that had taken place and had two Med-i-vac helicopters enroute along with four inflatable Zodiac rescue boats. With the assistance of the military, SLOVFD was able to rescue the 4 man crew of the aircraft.

SLOVFD was called to the scene of a roofer stuck in a roof vent at the 1400 Block of 5th Street in San Lego Obispo. The roofer, Hans Gumbler, sustained 2nd degree burns from the hot metal vent and severely sunburnt legs. SLOVFD extracted the man in about 20 minutes after being on scene.

SLOVFD reported to the 2700 Block of 19th Street in San Lego Obispo for a strong odor of natural gas. After an investigation, the SLOVFD Fire Marshal discovered that the source of the odor was from a burner not shut off on the stove.

SLOVFD former Engine 1 was enroute to a call when it hit a car. The driver of the car was killed in the accident. former Engine 1 was declared a total loss. As of now, former Engine 1 will not be replaced due to budget limitations.

SLOVFD responded to a small aircraft crash two miles south of San Lego Obispo. The pilot was fatally injured as well as his co-pilot and a passenger. All apparatus of the SLOVFD responded. The state police later found the black boxes and turned them over for a proper investigation. Authorities ruled the crash an accident caused by pilot error.

SLOVFD purchased an observation aircraft for SAR missions and wildfire observation. The aircraft is a 1966 Helio H-295 Super Courier with pontoons to land on the small lakes that surround the entire geographical terrain of San Lego Obispo County.

San Lego Obispo VFD hired 2 more fulltime firefighters and 2 more volunteer firefighters. The department also made a proposition to buy a new piece of apparatus.
